Kansas Grain Bin Restoration
Product
Defender EZ25
Situation
A large agricultural organization in Kansas was faced with the challenge of restoring aging infrastructure within their operations. One critical structure—a frequently used grain bin—was showing significant signs of deterioration. Years of exposure to harsh weather conditions had caused the original roof coating to erode, leading to active leaks and widespread corrosion along the top of the structure.
Further inspection revealed deeper structural concerns: the concrete pad was crumbling and delaminating, and the substrate was beginning to fail. Multiple sections of the bin's concrete supports were compromised, posing both safety concerns and operational risk. With compliance standards at stake, a fast, durable solution was required to extend the life of the asset and restore its integrity.
Solution
To address both structural degradation and surface safety, the client partnered with UMI Coatings for a high-performance restoration solution. Due to the bin's outdoor location and exposure to changing weather conditions, timing and product selection were critical. A spray-applied system with rapid cure times was needed to minimize downtime and maintain operational continuity.
The rehabilitation process began with full surface scarification to clean and prepare the substrate. Severely damaged concrete was chipped out and replaced, and large voids were repaired using a high-grade mortar system. After thorough surface prep, UMI Coatings’ Defender EZ25 was spray-applied at 60–80 mils thickness. This durable polyurea coating was selected for its exceptional impact and corrosion resistance, as well as its fast-reacting properties—ideal for on-site application in variable weather conditions. An aggregate was also broadcast into the coating during application to create a non-slip walking surface for added safety.
Results
The grain bin was successfully restored to a like-new condition using Defender EZ25. The applied system delivered immediate performance benefits, sealing leaks, protecting against further corrosion, and reinforcing critical structural areas. Additionally, the introduction of a slip-resistant surface significantly improved safety for workers accessing the bin.
Thanks to the fast cure time and resilient nature of Defender EZ25, the project was completed efficiently with minimal disruption to operations. The agricultural organization now has a fully rehabilitated, compliant, and longer-lasting asset, protected by UMI Coatings.
